"Federal Law Makes Weed Research Complicated. Can A Van Help?"

I was approached by digital producer Emma Lee Gometz to create an editorial illustration to accompany a news article they were writing on a mobile cannabis research van. The objective of my design was to visualize how the van allowed researchers to “cut through the red tape” and make groundbreaking scientific discoveries faster, while also emphasizing the positive relationship between cannabis and science.
First, I did a little research of my own, because I wanted to accurately capture the van itself. I found that the Cannavan is a Ram 1500 Promaster, and selected several references for the way the sides and back of the vehicle look from different angles. I then explored several other options in the sketching phase, subtly changing the ratio of science/weed/van in each so that my client would have choices over the story we were telling.
After receiving positive feedback on my van sketch (#1 above), I moved forward with that concept and after making a few revisions the piece was ready to publish! Thank you to Emma and the team at Science Friday for this exciting opportunity, I’m honored to have been invited to contribute!
